HRPA STOOD AGAINST THE TORTUROUS HEADMAN OF NEAMATPUR, ASANSOL

HRPA has always been against oppression, exploitation and tyranny of any kind, which violates human rights. Be it an individual or an institution violating human right HRPA has always raised its voice in protest without any hesitation. Sometimes in order to give social justice to the weaker section of the people HRPA has to rise to the occasion going to any extent for the protection of human rights as the situation demands.

This time it was reported to Shamim Ahmed sometime in early 2009 that a torturous headman in Neamatpur had been making the lives of the people extremely miserable without scares and fears for law.

A poor man of Neamatpur being badly affected by his tyranny and oppression lodged a complaint with HRPA that his only daughter was being sexually harassed by the tyrannical son of the headman. As advised by HRPA he lodged the same complaint with the Kulti Police Station. But the headman got to know it immediately and intensified torture on the poor man and his family. The daughter of the poor man was abducted to unknown destination threatening for dangerous consequences if the complaint with the police was not withdrawn.

The poor man having no way out contacted HRPA yet again and asked for their help. Shamim Ahmed now took the matter very seriously and arrived at the Kulti Police Station along with the volunteers and local members of HRPA. The delegation demanded for an immediate Police action against the abductors and rescue the girl. The Police acted very sharply and within a few hours the girl was rescued and brought to the Police Station. Meantime the torturous headman along with violent mob reached the Police Station and threatened the Police to handover the HRPA members to them since they were outsiders creating problems in the area.

The Police somehow escorted the HRPA delegation and the victims till Durgapur so that they could reach Kolkata safely. On their arrival in Kolkata the girl and her father was boarded at a city hotel. The following morning Shamim on behalf of HRPA called for Press conference and informed the media about the torturous headman of Neamatpur relating what happened to the victims who were physically present in the said Press conference. HRPA delegation along with the victims later called on the Governor and the Home Secretary requesting them to take immediate and appropriate measure against the situation and safety and security of the victims. The Administration backed by the Press acted immediately to the arrest the headman along with other offenders.
